الملوثة للأدوات الزجاجية وغيرها، فكانت توضع في براميل ثقيلة وتصرف في أعماق البحار. وحديثا تدفن في الأرض في مكان خاص أعد لهذا الغرض بطريقة تمنع تسرب أي إشعاع إلى البيئة الجوية.

وعلى العموم فإن الرقابة المحكمة المستمرة قد ساعدت على حفظ مستوى التلوث الإشعاعي للبيئة الجوية والمائية إلى أقل المستويات الآمنة، والخطر كله يكمن في التسرب الإشعاعي بسبب الحوادث المفاجئة، وقد ذكر هذا الموضوع بالتفصيل تحت عنوان التلوث الإشعاعي للبيئة والأغذية
